🐟 The Ultimate Guide to Shelling on Sanibel Island
Why Sanibel’s beaches are famous for shells, where to look, and what to bring home.
Sanibel Island is one of the best shelling destinations in North America, and it’s not an accident — it comes down to geography. Most barrier islands run north-south, parallel to the coast, which limits what washes ashore. Sanibel runs east-west, scooping up shells from the Gulf of Mexico like a net. The result is the famous “Sanibel Stoop” — the hunched-over posture of shellers combing the sand.
When to Go Shelling
Low tide is your best window, especially the hour or two right after. Early morning is prime time, before the beach fills up and other shellers have picked over the best spots. And if you’re on-island after a storm, get out there — rough surf churns up shells that have been sitting offshore, and the pickings right afterward can be extraordinary.
Where to Shell
Right Outside Sundial
Our stretch of beach is well known for easy shelling — you don’t have to go far to start finding good specimens.
Bowman’s Beach
One of the island’s most celebrated shelling beaches, a bit removed from the crowds near the causeway.
Blind Pass
Where Sanibel meets Captiva — currents here tend to pile up shells on both sides of the pass.
What You Can (and Can’t) Take Home
Florida law prohibits collecting live shells — if there’s something living inside, it needs to go back in the water. This is taken seriously on Sanibel, so a quick check before you pocket anything is worth the habit. Empty shells are fair game, and there are plenty of those.
Shells Worth Watching For
The junonia is the prize find most collectors dream about — rare enough that finding one earns you minor local celebrity status, with your name sometimes printed in the island paper. More commonly you’ll find lightning whelks, alphabet cones, lace murex, and sand dollars. If you want to put names to your haul, the Bailey-Matthews Shell Museum on-island is genuinely worth the visit.
New to shelling? Bring a mesh bag, a small garden trowel for digging, and don’t be shy about getting your knees sandy — the best finds are usually half-buried.
